Support to the European REPowerEU Plan

The REPowerEU Plan, adopted by EU leaders in May 2022, is a comprehensive and ambitious plan describing how the EU can phase out the dependence on fossil fuels from Russia, but also its broader dependence on fossil fuels, as soon as possible.

This project offered technical support to EU Member states in identifying the most suitable investments and reforms at national level to phase out the dependency on fossil fuels, taking into account both the national and regional contexts and dependencies, and providing each Member State with the necessary elements to develop a national action plan and/or to amend relevant existing plans. In this context, the government of Cyprus requested assistance to create an action plan a) for the roll-out of renewable and fossil-free hydrogen and b) for the adoption of innovative hydrogen-based solutions and renewable energy sources in industry.

For this purpose, CyI used its technoeconomic analysis capacity for the identification of cost-effective options for the production and use of green hydrogen in Cyprus. At the same time, it provided recommendations on expanding the national Recovery and Resilience Plan with a view to diversifying sources of energy supply, saving energy, and accelerating the deployment of renewable energy sources.
